About the 17th Annual Serve-a-thon.
On Saturday, June 12, 2010, Chicago Cares will engage more than 6,000 volunteers in hands-on projects to transform our city's schools into bright, beautiful places where children can learn and grow. School upkeep isn't what it should be, and a child's learning environment does affect their learning potential. Chicago Cares' volunteers will try to fill in this gap by building benches, landscaping, painting classrooms, creating custom murals and beautiful mosaics. We need your help in order to make this impact! We have two specialty roles where we need volunteers: Roadies and Bus Ambassadors.

Roadies help with the "behind the scenes" tasks that are crucial to a smooth and well run event

This is the perfect role if you don't have time to commit to a full day of service because of your busy schedule, if you want to take on a special role but don't have time to prepare before the event, or you want to get a different point of view for how our large one day events work.

  • What do Roadies do? More than 300 Roadies are needed to welcome and check in volunteers, manage buses, hand out lunches, help control foot traffic, tear down the event, and more.
  • New to Chicago Cares? Great! Roadies need not have any previous volunteer experience with Chicago Cares; you will serve alongside Chicago Cares staff.
  • Do I need any training to be a Roadie? No! Just come with a positive attitude and be ready to work.
  • Where do Roadies Serve? All Roadie duties take place at Serve-a-thon Plaza, Soldier Field's Stadium Green.
  • Can I pick my Roadie task? Assignments are first come, first serve and will be distributed when you check-in at the Roadie tent on June 12.
  • How old do I have to be?  Roadies ages 12+ are welcome, but we request that any Roadies 12-18 be accompanied by a parent or guardian. For our afternoon shift, we need a large number of Roadies who are 21 or older.
  • Free t-shirt! Roadies receive a t-shirt and goody bag.
  • Can I be a Volunteer AND a Roadie? In most cases, Roadies cannot also be event volunteers with a company, group or team simply because of event schedule conflicts. If you are hoping to be both an event volunteer and a Roadie, please contact us at roadie@chicagocares.org to determine whether this is possible.

Bus Ambassadors are the voice of Chicago Cares on our 200 event buses.

This is a perfect role for you if you have been a Roadie and are ready to take your service to the next level, if you want to do something extra but don’t want to lead a project or if you just want to make the maximum impact possible while serving at the event.

  • What do Bus Ambassadors do? Bus Ambassadors help Chicago Cares by distributing waivers and evaluations, answering questions, and sharing opportunities for continued service with Chicago Cares while on the bus to the project site.

  • Why is this role important? Having these tasks completed on the bus ride allows us to spend more time doing hands on, meaningful work at the project site. BAs increase our impact for the day and allow us to maximize limited volunteer time.

  • Do I need any training to be a Bus Ambassador? Yes, but it's quick and easy. Chicago Cares provides complete training and a script for you to read (online, to be reviewed at your convenience prior to the event). We are always available to answer any questions.

  • Can I be volunteer and a BA? Yes! Upon arrival, BAs participate in the project alongside their passengers. If you are already registered with a volunteer team from your company or group, you can also be a Bus Ambassador for that company or group. Please be certain to note the name of your company, group or team when signing up as a Bus Ambassador so we can place you accordingly.

  • What if I am already a Serve-a-thon Team Captain? Registered Team Captains make great Bus Ambassadors! Volunteers already look to you for information about the event, why not make it easier for your team by combining these roles?

  • Free t-shirt! BAs receive a t-shirt and goody bag.
