Being a Project Site Manager (PSM)
All projects have at least 2 (and sometimes as many as 11 or 12) PSMs assigned to lead the work being done at that location. Each PSM directly supervises one or more groups of volunteers, providing all of the tools and leadership necessary for them to successfully complete their assigned tasks. All PSMs have the support of an experienced Primary PSM and a Chicago Cares staff member.

As a PSM, you will make a difference to a Chicago school. Your leadership, enthusiasm, energy, know-how and successful people and project management will bring new, bright, green, clean and organized spaces to the hundreds of children who spend their days at that school.

PSMs must:

ONGOING (now & forever, or at least until Serve-a-thon is over)

  • be at least 21 years old

  • be willing to learn quickly and develop your leadership skills

  • communicate regularly with your Chicago Cares staff Liaison and Primary PSM

  • keep your commitment to be a leader (we need you!)

BEFORE THE EVENT

  • NEW THIS YEAR! participate in a mandatory Serve-a-thon Primer webconference (you will choose from a variety of day/time options)

  • NEW THIS YEAR! select your school based on tasks, location and a training time that is a good match for you (all PSMs will receive an e-mail with this information in April)

  • NEW THIS YEAR! attend a required on-site training at your school; this training will be lead by your Chicago Cares staff Liaison and Primary PSM and will serve as an opportunity for you to connect with your school, view the space, gain technical skills specific to your tasks, plan roles and get to know your co-leaders

  • read all the training materials you will receive

DAY OF EVENT (June 14: 7:00 am - 5:30 pm)

  • take responsibility

  • arrive at your site early to sort, move and set up all of the project supplies and signage

  • provide an brief orientation and wrap-up session with information about the site

  • lead volunteers with effective instruction, motivation and troubleshooting (each leader typically directly supervises a group of 10-30 volunteers)

  • set the tone by showing enthusiasm and grace under pressure

  • work with the volunteers to clean up, leaving the site cleaner than you found it

POST-EVENT (by June 23: 20 minutes)

  • complete an electronic evaluation to help us make improvements to the event

Think you're ready to be a Primary PSM instead?
I've been a PSM or Team Coordinator,
and I'm ready to lead the leaders and
manage a Serve-a-thon project.

Want to be a Muralist instead?
I'm an artist by trade or hobby.
I want to design a custom mural and
lead volunteers as they paint it on June 14.

All Primary PSM positions are full at this time.
