Senior Safety at Judge Fisher Apartments (formerly Senior Birthday Party)

(Formerly Senior Birthday Party at Judge Fisher Apartments)

Engage in conversation and activities with seniors living at Judge Fisher Apartments, a CHA building. Volunteers and seniors will discuss the ways in which people can be victims of scams or fraud and identify strategies to protect themselves from these events. End the day with an interactive game and birthday treats to celebrate the attendees and make meaningful connections! Chicago Cares’ volunteer projects are opportunities to connect with our neighbors, challenge our assumptions, change how we think and feel about our city, and inspire action – all while making a tangible, positive impact through service.

Description During the project, volunteers will put up decorations, call numbers for Bingo, serve birthday treats, and make conversation with the seniors and each other, sharing their experiences with fraud and tricks to prevent it. Volunteers will need to sign in at the security desk with a valid ID.

Transit Information This location is accessible via the Red line (Thorndale) and the #147 Outer Drive Express bus (Sheridan & Ardmore). Limited street parking is available.

Community Partner The Chicago Housing Authority provides rental housing to more than 50,000 families and individuals, while supporting healthy communities in neighborhoods across the city. The CHA’s Judge Fisher Apartments offers subsidized housing for low-income seniors who live independently. The building is home to a diverse group of residents, and many languages are spoken. Judge Fisher Apartments has been a Chicago Cares partner since 2013 for this project.

Program Goal Volunteers will engage with seniors and help facilitate conversations surrounding scams targeted toward vulnerable populations, all while promoting community and combating social isolation to support residents’ health and wellness.

Impact of Program Vulnerable populations such as older adults are at risk for being targeted for scams because of limited knowledge of phishing and fraud. Volunteers will assist seniors in deepening their knowledge of these risks, allowing volunteers to become informed advocates of protections against fraud targeting vulnerable populations.
