Language Exchange at Castleman Apartments

By volunteering at this project, volunteers will have an opportunity to exchange ideas and language. Bias and negative stereotypes affect an individual’s world view, which often leads to isolation and disconnection from those different from us. In order to broaden one’s world view, it is important to increase exposure to different perspectives. Ultimately, volunteers and residents will develop increased empathy and contribute to a stronger, more unified Chicago.

Description Formerly known as Senior Breakfast Club at Castleman Apartments. During the project, volunteers will prepare and serve breakfast as well as participate in cultural exchanges with seniors through guided conversations and a picture bingo game. Volunteers who speak the following languages are encouraged to attend: Korean, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Cantonese, and Tagalog.

Transit Information This location is accessible via the #147 (Outer Drive Express) bus as well as El Red line (Argyle). Street parking is also available onsite.

Community Partner The Chicago Housing Authority provides rental housing to more than 50,000 families and individuals, while supporting healthy communities in neighborhoods across the city. The CHA’s Castleman Apartments offers subsidized housing for low-income seniors who live independently. Castleman Apartments has been a Chicago Cares partner since 2000 for this project.
