Age Minimum (with Adult): 18+, Minimum Age:18+
Referral: South-East Asia Center
Description Our volunteer tutors teach English to adult immigrants and refugees. Tutors usually meet one-on-one with the same student or with small groups of 2-4 adult learners. There are also opportunities to help prepare immigrants for the U.S. citizenship interview and test. Generally, tutors meet with students once or twice a week for 1-2 hours at a time. Tutors are asked to make a 3-month commitment to their student. Tutors are provided training free of charge. Our students range from low-literacy to conversational level.
Impact Our volunteers actively support immigrants and refugees as they transition to life in the local community by tutoring them in English and building a bridge of mutual cultural understanding. English becomes the tool that the students use to gain access to resources and gain control over their future. Cultural understanding becomes the means whereby the volunteer tutors and the students build strong ties that support building a vibrant and diverse community life which benefits everyone. Our volunteer tutors find the experience culturally enriching and satisfying, especially when they see students achieve goals such as improving English, gaining employment and becoming U.S. citizens.
