Community Space Beautification at Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse

This facility holds the Chicago Park District’s only teaching greenhouse and advances environmental stewardship by connecting people to nature, teaching sustainable gardening practices and promoting healthy food options to people of all ages. Volunteers at this project will support the staff of the greenhouse with whatever they need to maintain the grounds, therein also sustaining the quality of its programs. Investing in greenspaces promotes greater environmental awareness and welcoming and safe spaces such as this one promote physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellbeing. Chicago Cares’ volunteer projects are opportunities to connect with our neighbors, challenge our assumptions, change how we think and feel about our city, and inspire action – all while making a tangible, positive impact through service.

Description During the project, volunteers will assist where needed at the greenhouse with tasks that may include weeding, prepping for garden shows, helping various greenhouses and the grounds. By supporting the staff, you’ll play a role in sustaining the quality of programs offered by the organization. All tools, gloves, supplies and training are provided by the Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse. This project is rain or shine and mostly indoor work, but volunteers may be outdoors at any time of the year. Volunteers should dress for the weather and dress in layers, as it can get warm inside or cool outside.
