Garden Beautification at Growing Home
At Chicago Cares, we believe volunteering should be the start of a journey toward equity in our city. Through this program, volunteers will connect with other Chicagoans through service and collaborate to support Growing Home, a long-term community partner in the Englewood neighborhood.
Growing Home’s mission and vision is “a world of healthy people and communities. Everyone deserves to have a good job, and everyone deserves to eat well.” They live into this vision through a variety of offerings at their urban farm in Englewood, which is the first and only USDA-certifiedhigh-production farm in Chicago. The farm spans several lots and contains five hoop houses, where they grow over 200 varieties of vegetables. From seeding to harvesting and cleaning, all produce is kept within a 20-mile radius of the farm, ensuring Growing Home is providing good food to their surrounding communities. Every Thursday, Growing Home hosts the Wood Street Farm Stand, where produce grown on-site is sold.
Growing Home isn’t just a farm. They offer a 14-week job training program for folx who face a variety of employment barriers. Through this program, participants acquire job skills and real work experience which equips them to transition into sustainable careers. Growing Home’s educational efforts do not end there. They also host interactive tours of the farm and have a learning garden for hands-on learning opportunities, typically for schools and youth.
Project Details: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Growing Home has been dedicating their time and efforts toward emergency food distribution in the Englewood community. Right now, they are in need of support with their farm. Volunteers will help with weeding, landscaping, and garden beautification so that Growing Home can prepare for their upcoming harvesting season. Volunteers should come prepared - wear a face mask/covering, long pants, closed-toe shoes, sun protection, and bug repellent. Bring your own water - supplies will be available onsite but limited.
COVID-19 Alert: A mask or face covering over your nose and mouth is required for all volunteers for the duration of your volunteer activity. We recommend you bring your own, but gloves and extra masks will also be available at your project. Anyone who does not comply with this requirement will be asked to leave the project immediately. Volunteers will also be following physical distancing guidelines as recommended by the CDC.
DO NOT attempt to volunteer if in the last 14 days you or any members of your household:

Chicago Cares is committed to responsible volunteerism. We are taking these measures to limit any potential exposure for all individuals participating in our activities.
