New Life for Old Bags

Chicago Cares no longer manages this volunteer opportunity. For more information on how to get involved please reach out to United in Faith Lutheran Church directly.

Repurpose plastic grocery bags into a helpful item for the homeless. Volunteers will sort bags and fold them to create ‘plarn’ (plastic yarn)and weave them into sleeping mats. No crocheting experience is necessary! This program’s fun and lively atmosphere makes it great for families and volunteers of all ages. By participating, you’ll create a practical item for those in need out of materials that otherwise pose an environmental issue. The mats are distributed by Cornerstone Community Outreach and other organizations.
Partner: New Life for Old Bags is a collaboration between people of all ages and abilities to make mats for the homeless out of used plastic bags. New Life for Old Bags has been a Chicago Cares partner since 2012 for this project.
