Read-with-Me Junior at HGS

Help create a relaxing and fun end of day activity space for youth ages 3 to 6 living in interim housing. Volunteers can expect to work one-on-one or in small groups to read a book and complete a craft activity. Build literacy skills, reading and arts appreciation through invaluable individualized attention.

  • The project occurs at a confidential location.

  • Easy El access: Red Line

Partner: House of the Good Shepherd (HGS) provides housing and services for families affected by domestic violence. HGS has been a Chicago Cares partner since 1993 for this project, one of multiple Chicago Cares programs at this site.

Volunteer Resources:
Volunteers may find it beneficial to familiarize themselves with programs such as Head Start-Trauma Smart, a highly acclaimed early childhood trauma intervention program designed in response to the negative impacts of trauma in the lives of young children. Trauma can range from domestic violence or substance abuse within the family, to homelessness, neglect, and poverty. Tips implemented from this model can help to create a safe and nurturing environment where children can heal and thrive.

  • Please also note this activity has 10-15 volunteer seats dependent on the number of youth in residence. As families are rotating in/out on individual schedules youth numbers may be higher/lower without much leeway to adjust volunteer recruitment efforts. Your patience and enthusiasm to work in small groups when necessary is much appreciated. Small volunteer groups are also welcome to attend but require individual registration to allow for pre-project communication from Chicago Cares Volunteer Leaders.
