Age Minimum (with Adult): 18+, Minimum Age:18+
Description Volunteers can choose between two different programs. In After-School Tutoring & Writing, volunteers work one-on-one or in small groups with students to encourage their writing, support their homework, and have fun. It's encouraged that tutors commit to coming in on a weekly or biweekly basis for at least three months to maintain consistency and allow for greater relationship-building with students. In the Field Trips program, volunteers support 826CHI staff as they run interactive writing-based workshops for classrooms of students from around the city who are spending a morning in our office. There are several kinds of field trips, such as Storytelling & Bookmaking for 1st-3rd graders, Images & Imagination for grades 5 and up, and Memoir Writing for grades 8 and up. In all field trips, volunteers have the opportunity to engage students one-on-one or in small groups to support and inspire their writing and creativity.
Impact Volunteers work directly with students every day to make sure they feel supported, know that their voice matters, and have fun with writing. 826CHI would not be able to reach as many students as they do each year (2,400+) or provide them with high-quality programs without an enthusiastic and diverse cohort of volunteers.
Time Monday-Fridays, mornings and afternoons, Jan-June, September-December
