Referral: Asian Human Services ESL Tutor Volunteers

Description Volunteers will assist with Asian Human Services adult education program at the LEAF office as ESL tutors.  Volunteers will be matched with one adult ESL student who could benefit from extra educational support and one on one instruction time.  Specifiically, volunteers will meet with their student from 9:00am-11:00am at least once a week for an entire class term (Jan-April; May-Aug; Sept-Dec) and work individually with them on various skills and activities determined and communicated by the student's ESL teacher.  Depending on the English level of the student, volunteers may spend their time reviewing the alphabet, practicing pronunciation, building vocabulary and reading skills, and breaking down complex lesson plans into smaller parts with their student.

Impact Many of their students are eager for one on one instruction in English--which is not feasible in a classroom setting--so volunteers lend a lot of support to our program, ensuring that we continue to provide quality and compassionate services. Volunteers will see the impact of their hard work thorugh the growth and deepened understanding of their students, which in turn helps support Asian Human Services teachers, who are often unable to network individually with students who may be struggling.  Volunteers in the past have commented on the rich, rewarding experiences they've had helping students achieve their goal of improving their English.

Time  Tutors must commit to at least 1 9-11am shift every week for one term.
