READS is a literacy intervention program for children in grades 1-3. Volunteer tutors work with an individual student and/or small group of students on a variety of literacy-based activities. Tutors should be able to commit to attending READS a minimum of one day/week for the semester.


A child’s capacity to succeed in school is greatly impacted by whether or not they are reading at or above grade level by the 3rd grade. The READS program engages students identified as needing reading intervention in project-based learning to help increase reading fluency, comprehension, decoding skills, computer literacy and enjoyment of reading. Because of a strong curriculum and the volunteer tutors who help execute it, the program is working: Over 90% of students in the program are reading at or above grade level by the time they complete the 3rd grade.
